Default Simple, stupid question.....

Hi Everyone!
I'm very new to this site and Corvette. I just purchased a 1984 Manual trans Corvette. I opened the Hood to check all of the fluid levels, and found all of them filled, except one. It isn't labeled, but is on the driver side firewall. Could anyone tell me what it is for, and what kind of fluid that I need to fill it with.

Thank you!

Sounds like your brake master cylinder but an 84 has 2 plastic reservoirs. Is it mounted to a large round black tank on the firewall? Oh, I see it's a stick shift-may also be your clutch cylinder.. Pix would help.

Here's a pic showing the brake master cylinder on an '85. If the reservoir you're asking about is underneath the brake booster, it's the clutch master cylinder and uses brake fluid.

Default Gotcha!

My '84 has another smaller reservoir closer to the driverside firewall.

Wow! your engine is super clean!!! I guess after I fill what ever that reservoir is for, I gotta clen my engine compartment. Now, I have a goal!

The reservoir that I'm looking at is bolted to the firewall, and is a right above the battery.

Thank you for the reply, by the way.

I've never had a 84 but on my 93 thats where my clutch reservoir is. If you could post a picture that would take all the guess work out of this. I know one of the guys would know right away what it is with a photo.

If it needs to be filled, where did the fluid go? Welcome to the Corvette world.

Bolted to the firewall, above the battery is the clutch master cylinder. DOT-3 brake fluid is the stuff. Notice too the color of the old fluid... If it is dark, and especially if there is some black flecks floating around or a black coating on the bottom of the reservoir, you'll want to purge the system.

Just a thought...

That is your headlight fluid resevior. Be careful, running it low can mess a lot of systems up.

Just kidding, agree with either master or clutch. Both take dot 3 so just fill it up!

Yep, blinker fluid goes in there. (Dot3/4)

When mine let go about 5/6 years ago, all the fluid ended up in my brand-new capeting.

Under the car. Don't worry about it put a shot glass of brake fluid in it and go on with it.

You really need to totally flush out and bleed the hydraulic clutch. Here is a How To write-up from the FSM.
