527 Cars produced, how do you determine which car # you have?...is it coded in the vin or is it a seperate seial # like the 88 Anniv. plaque?...thanks Kevin
(considering a 95 Pace Car)
The Pace Cars were just an RPO option.
Not sure if they had any kind of plaque or anything, but there would be nothing in the VIN to indicate a Pace Car.

I think there is a pace car registry somewhere out there in computer land. I'll bet a few mouse clicks would turn it up and they would know the answer.
I met a 95 Pace Car owner while waiting in line for the Bloomington Gold Road Tour to kick off. He said that his was quite rare as a few of the cars came through with the rear badging in the wrong place. His was one of them.
It seems like the Indy 500 logo was in the white portion of the bumper instead of the purple.
I just cant figure out why so few of these cars were sold. In 78 it seemed everyone wanted a pace car. VetNinvestments rates these cars at almost double the value of a regular C4. I think they are one of the few good investments in the C4 market.

Z4Z was a trim only package. Being rare makes them more desirable for some people, but it is really only a paint scheme and a couple badges. Personally I wouldn't consider these to be especially collectible.

Makes me wonder if it is really a Pace Car, or if a PO glued his own logo on.

Not true for all of them. The 3 that were used at Indy, the exhausts were modified, they were lowered 1", and came with a roll bar.

Maybe because it was a $2800 option and you really had to like the purple color. But the availability was pretty limited as there were only 415 cars that went to the top 415 Chevy dealers. So not every dealer got a car nor could they simply just order one.
The 78 Pace Car was a little different in that the 78 was also the 25th Anniversary car. The black/silver paint scheme looked better to most people.
The 98 radar blue was almost like a shade of purple. I just never liked the decals on the pace cars. Did the 98 come without all those decals and graphics?

The way I understood it, the decals/emblems were applied by the dealership... which is why many of them are screwed up in some way.
It's not like this is an extremely easy scheme to "fake". By the time you did it well enough to ever be believable with the seats, decals, paint, etc you are pretty far on your way to being able to afford a real one.

I really doubt there would be reason to 'fake' a '95; they are NOT selling for significant $$ over stock '95 ( and that is not a high bar). There is not big upside to 'faking' a 95 P Car.
