Default Headlight Question

Yesterday, while diving with the headlights off, the passenger side headlight motor started rumnning like it was trying to shut -even though it was shut.
It now continues to do this when the headlights are closed. But, it stops if I turn on the marker lights.
It opens and works correctly with the headlights on.
For now I just unplugged the motor on that side.
What causes this and needs to be replaced or repaired?
Thanks,
Glen

Your Delran bushings inside the motor are slipping. Replace the bushings

I would say that while you are there you might as well replace the bronze gear. Mine looked ok on inspection but I bought the entire kit so I decided to replace it later. Was going to sell it since it looked in good shape but careful inspection found a hairline fracture.

Sorry, I was away for a long weekend.
Yes, mine is an 84 and I thought that there was a limit switch or something -I should be able to get this from most corvette venders?
Thanks,
Glen

those are impossible to find, if you're going to keep the car, upgrade to the later year style, spendy , but well worth the money. one of the members converted his to a independent 'manual' switch, seems to be the cheapest fix , do a search.

When I first looked at the motor etc, I found some paper towel wrapped around the shaft. Is it possible that it bent something on the limit switch that can be fixed?
I'm going to look at the factory shop manual tonight to see how this all is assembled.
Anyone know anyone that has a new or used passenger side limit switch they'd be willing to sell?

Are the headlight motors another orphan item on the 84?
If I change to a newer year, which ones? What is involved -like any connector issues?
Thanks,
Glen

84-87 are all the same, they are 'side' specific, you can send yours in as a core and the various venders will send you a tested rebuilt, there's also some for sale in the parts section. If you buy from a priv. party on here , make sure they have a track record on the site, in otherwords, make sure they've posted before and are not just selling that one part. theres quite a few really good people on this site and every now and then we get a flake. changing to the later year requires that you change everything, from the horshoe out to the module and a bit of rewiring. Its not hard and there is plenty of folks here who've done it , myself included.

Could also be the gears if they are stripped. The limit switches have nothing to work against.

with my early lites the gears were like new but the switch made and broke contact, probably a good idea to buy a gear set and try that first

This looks to be the correct one for the passenger side of my 84 -hopefully it is
Thanks,
Glen

It goes up OK and stops with no problem -it only continues to run when closing it?
Could it still be just the gears?
Thanks, Glen

Several years ago my '84 did the same thing... My problem was a worn gear with the only worn tooth being the last one to engage as headlights closed. I replaced with the bronze gear set and have not had any problems since. The bronze gears are noisy though.
