93, no engine mods, 109K miles. Started fine yesterday at lunch. After work, engine would crank and that's all. Car is well taken care of, not driven hard. I checked for loose wires, but nothing obvious. I thought I smelled gasoline, though, leading me to believe it is a spark issue vice fuel. Anything obvious before I start trouble shooting? I am an average mechanic and can replace parts...my diagnosis skills are weak. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I did use the search engine on the site, but to no avail.
Off the cuff without digging deeper- I start by looking at the ignition control module. It's located at the passenger side front of your motoe, held on by two bolts and is easy to get to. Take it off and take it to Autozone or one of the chain stores and have them test it. If it's bad, it's your problem. They have a habit of going out suddenly with no warning, and when mine did it mimicked running out of fuel- except it had plenty. It'd crank and turn over just like you'd ran it dry. Absolutely no warning, one minute I was cruising at 70 mph, next I was waiting on a tow. If I remember right, it costs around $85 bucks.... Just a suggestion, hope it at least helps you narrow it down.
Thanks. I'm comfortable doing those kinds of diagnosis. Some of the other trouble shooting stuff is a little over my head. Somedays its just easier to write the check..and I do have a trusted mechanic that I take things to that are beyond my skill set.
I did find a pretty comprehensive troubleshooting guide on the forum.

Reason: Needed to add more info.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago..
I went ahead and put a new MSD coil on when I replaced the ICM..
Good Luck!
If it is the ICM, clean up the heat sink and don't forget the heatsink paste under it..mine did not come with it and is hard to find. Autozone had it but it took a while to explain to them what it was.
Ahhh, the light bulb has just come on...I have an extra one of those ICMs in the garage. Wouldn't that be nice if all I had to do was take off the old and have new one put on? Come to think of it, I had the ICM repalced a few years ago. I'm excited to get working on it, but still have 1 small problem, the car is 30 miles from home. Getting the trailer ready today.....

A random ICM hanging around? Well, I guess it had to come in handy sometime.
You might even be able to do a parking-lot swap.

For some reason, noone knows what it is. You would be better off going to an electronics store and getting it. They are more likely to know what you are talking about. Here is an example. I've heard it called thermal paste, thermal grease, heatsing grease/paste, CPU glue, etc.
Autozone has it but you have to ask them to look it up under ignition parts and not paste..some ICM's come with it.
You don't have to tow it home unless the ICM is original and is riveted in place..then you have to drill out the rivets and replace with the screws..if not its a 10 minute job...
It was the fuel pump....still had the original one...18 years later and about 110K miles. The pump was still good, there was some hose that had ruptured. Not too bad.
