Default C4 tire advice

New purchase 92 coupe has tires made in 06, but looking to be in good condition. Mechanic suggests replacing anyway.( he does not sell tires)
Thinking of getting new tires in near future.

Q:
1. Tires for W. coast Florida...heat and rain...? Hankooks sound good?
2. Tire size all four is 275/40/17. Any reason to change tire size or rims for weekend driver?
Any reason to have different(larger) tires or rims on rear?

Thanks for advice

Personally I wouldn't get too excited about replacing tires that are five years old unless they are really hard or show signs of sidewall cracking. I would have no problem running them another year or two. But then, I'm in Michigan- maybe year round use in Florida is harder on them.

I would think higher quality tires would be ok, i.e. Michelins or BFG type tires. As suggested, keep a good eye out for cracking.

If you decide to replace them I would suggest Michelin Pilot Sport A/S in the stock size.

6 years is more or less the standard for replacing tires... at 5 you are fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

OK, you are looking ahead. Next year is 2012 and the tires will be six years old. I did not like the hankookc that came on my car when I bought it. No real grip and didn't like rain too much.
I've used a couple of different brands, but my favorite inexpensive tire is the Summitto HTRZ. Now my wife has gone through a few sets of tires on her 2004. She has a set of Khumo ESX and loves them. So far she has more miles on them than the previous set without the issues they had. With that said I would not reccomend the Cooper Zeon tire at all.

Oh - and no need to change tire sizes for a weekend driver the 275 is perfect for a square setup.

Mechanic is probably just covering his but. Tires should be good for a few more years unless they start drying out and cracking or you plan extensive high speed use. Manufacturers only warantee their tires for 6 years, and many tire companies (Discount/American) won't work on tires older than 6 years, legal liability exposure is the excuse. A cynic might suggest its just so they can sell more tires. Kumho makes a pretty good tire for the price (several, actually). All tires seem to last the same anymore, and odds are you won't wear them out. You might check out Tirerack.com for ideas

The Nitto NT555 would be a good choice for price and weather considerations. Not a fan of directional tires on passenger cars but for performance you end up there.

Unless you run the hell out of the car I'd go for BF Goodridge just for the price...

I used to own 5 Corvettes...and I replaced one set of tires on one of the cars every spring in rotation...... In December of last year I purchased a 6th Corvette and have not yet figured out what I am going to do in the spring of 2012 ..

Most likely I will go to a 6 year rotation plan which I honestly do not feel all that comfortable with..

Just for the rain and dry weather I like the Conti Extreme Contact DW. I run 275's on the front and 295's on the rear and they will not hydroplane. When I first got them I intentionally ran through about an inch of standing water and slammed on the brakes. They squealed like they were on dry pavement.

By far the best tire in the rain I've used.

I am running the Hankook ventus sport k104 they are great ! 275/40/17 they are a silica tread compound so they are good in the wet. They stick to the road really well.

I have Continental Extreme Contact DW, 255's front & 285's rear on my 94 coupe. They're excellent on both dry & wet pavement. They don't seem to have a tendency to hydoplane at all.

Like a few others said, they are likely still good. Otherwise I vote for the Nitto 555.

Just put a set of these Nitto's on my car (in the same size you mentioned) about a thousand miles ago. I love them! They really stick in the corners, go straight on the highway[no hunting or wandering] and are smooth and quiet too. I can actually hear my wife talking now....not that that is such a great thing though. Can't say about wet traction yet, because I've only had them in a little dampness so far and no heavy rain.

Thanks for all the advice...

Have 2 Yokohamas on rear and 2 Futuras on front.
Can probably wait buy 4 new matches in early 2012.
Will say with all 4 275/40/17 .
Still have to decide as to run-flats or not.
Am researching all recommendations including Vredsteins (surrisingly well thought of).

Thanks again!!
