Having a problem with my '88 vette. The car will go into drive and reverse but will not go faster than 15 to 20 mph then the engine just revs but no acceleration. Is this an indication of the transmission control modual going out or the transmission? has anyone experienced this before?
Thanks. Was hoping that it was something simple but I was thinking the same thing. Do you know how much a rebuilt trans goes for about?
I don't have any idea how much it would cost where your are but here in Tennessee it would be a $2,000 - $2,500 job if you have everything done by a shop. I would guess that a rebuilt trans would run $1,200 - $1,500 based a quote I got from a good shop here.
Hi
I have had a similar thing happen to my vette with a reco trans, the governor had failed within a week of getting it replaced it would not go out of first gear..... had to drive it home at max rpm.
Even selecting second or third gear and overdrive would not help.
The governor was replaced with the trans still in the vette.
Recommended by Lingenfelters and I have beaten on it no less than 4 times a day as a DD when it was in the Firebird making 410 at the wheels. Lasted 3.5 years under that system.
FRIED CLUTCHES WHATS THE FLUID LOOK (smell like) if the fluid is not brite red and stinks your in for a overhaul.i agree with the other post about the gov. but you say your slipping so i would think clutches good luck

Thanks! I am going to have that looked at. Does the governor look like a small canister on the side of the trans?
