Does a dead battery "drop out" OBD codes??
However I have discovered that the battery is completely DEAD!!
When I replace it will the diagnostic codes, telling me what mechanical problems caused the car to stop running, be there or were they dropped, never to be retrieved again????

There are battery backups that connect to the ALDL that will provide enough voltage to the ECM that disconnecting the battery will not cause erasure of stored codes. Is there an AutoZone parts store in your area? They have rental tools and they may have a backup tool. The rental is "free" in that you simply pay a deposit and when you return the tool, you get your deposit back.
Parts stores may also have a small plug-in device that goes into the cigarette lighter and uses a 9V battery. That will be enough to provide power to the ECM while the battery is being changed out.
