As some of you may know, I am in need of a tune up. I am attempting to determine the parts to replace, the best place to have do the work and what brand parts to use.
At this point I have decided to replace fuel filter, coil, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter and pcv.
The mechanic I am dealing with at the local speed shop is suggesting the Petronix "Flame Thrower" ignition kit (Jegs part # 751-D8010) and Taylor spark plug wires.
I am not familiar with these brands and I need your input on their performance and quality.
I have Taylor wires and likes the looks alot. For most cars though, plug wires are plug wires. As long as you get a good, high quality set they will work fine. I did a similar tune-up to what you are doing when I first got my '88 last year, it made a really big difference in mileage, idle and power.
I don't know much about pertronix except that their points elimination kits are popular with some of my friends who own older Volkswagons and Porsches. They seem to be a good, reputable company, but I have no personal experience with them.
If I were you, I'd get the Hypertech Power Coil Kit, aswell as a Holley Annihilator HEI Module, and a set of MSD 8.5mm SuperConductor Wires. Also, when you put on new spark plugs, cut the ground strap back a bit. Trust me, with those parts, you'll FEEL a difference. (It's really amazing)
