Default Cleaning the LT1

Merv's post got me thinking. Everybody is deathly afraid to let water touch the car because of the opti. Can't you shield the opti with a strategically placed plastic bag and have at it? That LT1 looks impossible to get the nooks and crannies clean without taking half of the car apart.

I've seen posts from a few guys that wrapped the Opti in plastic, then wrapped that with a towel, and then sprayed very carefully, avoiding the Opti. Proceed at your own risk. Personally, I clean my '93s engine compartment with rags and a little warm water or wd40. Once you get it clean it's not that hard to maintain.

i don't think you need a hose, just some time and effort.
I used a wet sponge, old toothbrush, toothpicks, and a towel. I never got too much water on anything at one time.

Yes, there is alot that i won't be able to get to, but its not really that bad. :)

I agree with Jerry I use WD40. It cleans good and leaves a bright finish. Chuck

I carefully spray mine at the car wash. Nine years, 49K still running.

Dittos to above; keep water away from your crankshaft (opi-spark distributor). I wrap mine in plastic and put shop rag around it as well. Cover the PCM and alternator with shop rags as a precautionary measure.

I'll throw my voice in the WD40 crowd. No worries about the optispark that way...and it does a great job cutting the grease/grime.

I gotta tell you guys, I just got my 94 about 6 weeks ago and never knew about the opti spark(where is it located?). I used spray on foam engine cleaner and went at it with a gentle spray from the garden hose and fortunatly had no problem. Now that its relatively clean, from now on I'll use rags and WD-40. :D

Wow! Some folks can get away with that...for awhile....but it's pretty risky. The opti on the 92-94s DON'T like water...at ALL!

The opti is on the front of the engine, behind the waterpump. When you wind up replacing the opti...somewhere between 60K and 100K miles...consider installing the vent kit GM offers as a "upgrade". It'll help reduce the sensitivity of the optispark to moisture.
