I need to replace my convertible top on my 1995. It is the tan cloth top with the glass back window (the window seal is gone and the window is totally loose). In checking around, I have received quotes from $700 to $1250 ... for the same top (Robbins cloth).
Any and all input regarding the usual cost on this job would be greatly appreciated. The lower estimate is from a reputable guy (he did a friends Mercedes top and did a nice job). Would like to save $$$ but don't want to be missing something here.
I'll weigh in while you're waiting for others who are more familiar with the later model verts. Mine is an 86, vinyl top and plastic window. I paid $600 total for my new top, $400 of which was labor, and am very happy with it. My vinyl top is a cheaper top than your canvas. Iwent with someone referred to me me by my "corvette guy." For mine, he was able to reuse the headliner, weatherstripping and all hardware. So... first off, I would advise you to go with someone you trust (sounds like one of the guys did right by a friend of yours). Second, look into what you are getting in parts (is it possible the higher price guy is planning on replacing more stuff). You should also look into what is involved so you know what you are getting. There is a review in the C4 tech tips by Flame Red who converted from plastic to rear glass that I found helpful. It's easier to pay someone when you know how much work the job is! Good luck.
I got estamates of $600 before i got a vynil top as a gift and just installed it myself. The $600 quote was for a cloth top with vynil window. I figure just add the difference in cost of the top and you would be looking at $750.
Recently received an installation quote of $600.00 from a very reputable shop.
That's labor only... What is the condition of your weatherstripping/headliner? Those parts may need to be replaced at the same time. I've seen the step-by-step convertible top removal/installation video that many people speak of...still would not attempt it myself. :nonod:
Thanks for all the replies. Checked some more, still don't have the full story but the low bid is apparently an attempt to undermine business from the shop run by his soon to be ex. What a mess ! So ... As The World Turns ... that's all the info I have.
I will not be getting my top done at either place but have several referrals for another shop across town, and an estimate for $1095 for a new tan Robbins top and the weatherstripping. All else including the headliner is in great shape. Will be placing the order by weeks end unless further info develops.
