Default Another dash speaker question

Replacing the factory non-Bose speakers in my '84 with Infinity References. Rears were easy, dash another story. Searched and found quite a few threads, most saying aftermarkets are too high, which they are. I can't get the daspad to sit right, however, in looking at the Infinitys vs. the stock speakers, it seems there is only 1/4-1/3 inch difference. Figured an easy solution was to cut down the four mounting 'pillars' on the bottom of the plastic dash assembly, but they are hollow, so cutting of the top (or is it bottom lol) and I will lose the screw hole. Someone had to have figured out a way to do this . I really don't want to deal with door speakers, and I already tossed the box, etc on these Infinitys, so hopefully someone was a little more creative than I am right now. Thanks!!!!!

I installed those in my '89 several years ago. It was a real pain and the dash is bowed up where the speakers are. I need to redo it as I'd like for the dash to sit flat again. I did trim the bottoms of the speaker grilles for clearance as well as some of the dash structure below. It was so tight getting the pad back in that I had to remove the A pillar trim for installation. Thought I was going to crack the cheap fishing cooler foam pad. I haven't pulled the pad since because I dread the suffering. I'm really the only person to notice the non flat dash but it bothers me. However those speakers sound great when they have the windshield for sound reflection. If I had another half inch of clearance somewhere, then the dash would be flat again. I might try to shave the grilles flat underneath and thru bolt with countersunk screws from the top. Then wrap the grill with cloth and reinstall. Maybe that would work. Good luck and let me know if you succeed.

We had the exact same problem on our 87' and had to go with Pioneer speakers in the dash, as they're a thinner profile than the Infinity's. Everything else was the Infinity Reference series (rear hatch area and both doors). The installer told us, no way they were going to fit! And he was right! The Pioneer's barely, barely fit and like Siveck said it is difficult. I have to bow the dash pad, just to get the Pioneer's to clear!
