Default Removing Console

Hey everyone. I actually have time today to work on my 96 coupe. I have an auto and I want to remove the plastic console around it. I have a couple of questions. Where are the bolts that I need to remove and how do I get the leather shift **** off? I need to glue back the gear indicator, fix or replace the part that controls my back-up lights because the lights don't turn on. If I jiggle the gear shifter, I can see the back-up lights flash on and off. Also, under the lid for the cigarette lighter, it's all gummy and has cigarette butts. I've tried to use the search function but I can't seem to find how to remove it. Thanks everyone, Ed

Hey Ed,

I just took my console out a few days ago in my 92.
The are three bolts to take out
2 at the end under the console lid ( open lid )
1 under the cup or cigarette cup
To remove the plastic push button on mine, while in park so the button is all the way up, take a small flathead srew driver and on both side of the button ( driverside and passangerside) slid the flathead down each side and push in slightly to help pry the button upward.
Do this very slowly and delicately so you don't break the button or side and so you don't scratch the button maybe put a thin layer of tape on the end of the flathead.
After the button is out, then you will see a snap ring that has to be removed. There is a special tool to get these snap rings out or you can use your imagination and needle nose and a flathead to get it out. Make sure if your not using the special tool, than make sure to cover the top while your working on the c-clip just before you remove it (just so it doesn't go flying out and you won't find it) You can get this tool a Harbor Frieght or other placesthat seels tools.
then you will be able to remove the console but first you must disconnect the cigareet lighter and the bulbs that light up the shift indicator.
I think thats everything, just take your time and go slow, as these peices are plastic and old!

Good luck...

Chris

Chris gave you good instructions. Just a thing or two to add to it. In order to slide the cover back far enough to clear the tabs that go under the radio bezel you will have to remove the storage compartment lid. Just 4 screws and lay it aside, no need to undo the light wires. Then you will need to move the shift lever back to the rear in order to pull the cover back and up, might be best done before you remove the ****.

I recently replaced my leather shift boot by a Redline Goods one.
I did not need to take the console lid off at all. The console slid back up and out but had to be very careful removing the cigarette lighter leads so that they wouldn't pull off.
I have a console cushion over the lid, so in order to keep the lid open far enough I cut a small wooden stick that would hold it in place for a few minutes.
Also, be careful with the shifter indicator needle when putting everything back together, slid the console tabs into the retaining grooves, hook up the cigarette lighter and the indicator light bulb; and then lower the console making sure that the indicator needle is in the shifter groove. You will understand it when you see it.
As far as the know, be careful when prying on the ****. it could be easy to break the plastic if it is brittle.
