I've been gone for awhile because it's just a little too cold to work on the car right now. No, there is no snow here in Naples, Italy, but it's just the temp with high wind keeps me inside most of the time. If it is good weather, I'm on the roof with a cigar enjoying it rather than busting up my knuckles on 91'. Now that it's getting warmer, I'm hoping I could get some help with this.
I have done some searches, and I haven't found my symptoms. Generally, the problem with the climate control modules here are a blown fuze or a bad vacuum line, but this is really strange. I have power to it, I know this because the back light comes on and goes off when it's supposed to. However, the display shows nothing and none of the controls work. Without pulling apart the console, is it possible that one of the connectors in the back is disconnected? Is there a connection to the heater core that could be causing this?
That's going to be a real tough one to diagnose without the FSM! Could be electrical, mechanical or both. Doing any in-depth work on any C4 without the FSM isn't easy.
My 86 was doing the same thing. I pulled the unit out and took it apart. There is a circuit board plugged into the back of the face plate. The rectangular connector was not holding the board tight any more. I used a dental tool to reach in and raise each of the tiny connectors. Put it back together and it is working fine now.
The backlight for the display is likely on a completely different circuit from the actual function circuits of the HVAC system.
I'd not suspect anything related to the heater core or blower box. I'd first check fuses, then on to checking wiring connections at the control panel and the programmer that is under the driver's side dash.

Gotta agree with the Med Man, the lighting on the main dash panel is a separate circuit. Its 12 volts where the board also IIRC makes 5 volts for most of the circuitry and there is another circuit that runs the LCD's
There is only one connector on the back of the unit. The main power to the unit comes from the GAGES fuse, and I assume the rest of the instrument panel is working because you didn't say otherwise. Given that, it appears that the problem is inside the control head.
