I have a question that someone here may be able to answer. I apologize if it's a stupid question , but what the heck is the reason for the (circled) part of the dash to stick out like that? Is there something behind it?
They were going to be required (by our benevolent gov't) to install airbags when the design was being done. The gov't backed off before manufacturing started and GM just put the "breadbox" where the airbag was going to be.
Some of us have deleted this as we have worked on our cars. I personally like the cleaner look of our 84 without the breadbox. And the delete panel is a snap to remove compared to the breadbox.
