Did any guys from MD hear about the new law they want to pass [HB 550] About vintage plate use?Why are they messing with this I don't know.I guess they want all of the old cars off the road.
DPC
They way the bill reads is the 20 years goes to 25 you must have historic insurance and no driving except to shows or parades, this really sucks go to SEMA site they are fighting it,and no grandfathering in.
Have to wait 25 vs 20 yrs to categorized as "historic". Then, IF you choose to do so, maybe that state wants it treated accordingly. IOW, if you want you car treated as old, get the corresponding insurance and treat it accordingly.
That's the way I take it.

That does not tell It all,the insurance is not the big deal[historic is cheaper anyway] and 20 to 25 is not that bad but they want to take out the part that you can use it to take a drive on a nice day it must only be used for shows and parades.
I moved from Maryland yo Kentucky. Although the law may seem benign, if there are any loopholes in it they will soon be closed by Marylands finest.
Maryland also never takes a law off the books once enacted. Examples of ILLEGAL in Maryland:
It’s illegal to take a lion to the movies.
It is a park rule violation to be in a public park with a sleeveless shirt.
Oral sex can not be given or received anywhere.
Persons may not swear while on the highway.
I can almost see the legislature wanting to keep older vehicles from being daily driven with minimal insurance designed for cars that travel less that 3000-5000 miles per year.
Some states will actually "Run" your personal information to verify that you have another titled, licensed and insured vehicle. (In complete and total violation of the 4th Amendment but that's another story.
There are much better ways to accomplish their goals and every car club member in the state should text/e-mail their representative and let them know that you aren't happy.
What's the point in having a 53 Corvette if you can't take it out for a leisurely Sunday cruise. I can see limiting the mileage but not our "pursuit of happiness". But that's another story also.

Actually, Hagerty Insurance wanted verification of my daily driver before they issued my collector car policy.
I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a problem if the state decides to start farming that information for purposes only they can dream up.

I'm "showing it" in an neighboring state, a parade of one, etc...
I don't see how this is going to be practically enforceable. But, the logic for the restriction is curious as hell, and I would want an interview with the author to get at what they actually had in mind... Sounds like a BS over-reaching bill and as such I favor tanking it. Car clubs RALLY IN PROTEST!
Interesting... Heck it has not been all that long ago when they dropped the age limit down from 25 to 20 now they want to reverse that and increase it up to 25 again ???
The driving restrictions I THINK are honestly not really a change from the current restrictions.. BUT when I am heading North on Rt 15 towards Penna or South towards West Virginia I seem to always be going or coming from the shop where I had or will have my car looked at...
5 of my 6 Corvettes have Historic plates on them and all 6 have Collectible insurance
i use grundy for all mine, but had to provide vin of our dailydrivers. as far as restrictions for licensing,it will probably never be questioned by a cop if your on a sunday cruise. heh, you just did some repairs and your test driving or your on your way to or from a show or other eventt.
All of which beckons the question, why are "they" going after the vintage auto enthusiast? There are million other revenue sources they could tap. They could start by trimming the entitlement rolls by 1/3.
It behooves us all to pay attention to what's happening in Maryland, because if you think it can't happen in YOUR state......think again.

WA has "Collector Car" plates that allow cars that qualify (30 years old or older) to be registered permanently for a one-time fee and no annual renewal. These plates are for limited use things like going to and from events (shows, parades, cruise-ins, etc.) or for taking the car for any type of service work. The car can't be used as a daily driver with these plates.
Insurance is not an issue with collector plates as the driver has to show proof of liability insurance if he gets stopped. Doesn't matter if the car is new or old.
Over the last month, the DMV has been acting on complaints from people who see these plates on cars that are clearly violating the principle. What gets people upset is that the collector car plate fee is $35 plus the regular registration fee and you never pay again. Depending on where you live in WA, regular renewals can be over $200 per year.
So the DMV is starting to pull some of these plates where there is verified abuse.
