I have a 91 and I think I know what the problem is but want to see what you guys suggest. The low coolant light is on so I open the hood and the radiator cap up by the firewall on passenger side is cool to the touch and I look in the over flow tank down by the headlight area and its full to the brim.... fan is running and engine is about 180ish so I add some water until i get home i hope the rad and the water in there is cool to the touch..... Sooooooooooooooooooooo
Well a bad low coolant sensor comes to mind. This assumes you have not performed a recent thermostat or rad hose change recently. Let the car cool down and look in the high tank reservoir next to the passenger windshield. Is it full? What does your temp gauge read? If temp is fine then back to the low coolant sensor. If you opened up the system you could have air in the system or a bad thermostat.
I have not done anything to it as far as opening the system up. I thought and was hoping coolant sensor but would that stop the water from flowing? Its cold in the tank by the windshield but the cooling fans come on like the engine is getting warm and after running 20 min or so I can open the cap at the tank by the windshield and its not even warm. Maybe thermostat that would be nice i guess lol.
Your system is loosing pressure somewhere. The first thing I would change would be the upper radiator reservoir, the tank you removed the cap from. It is plastic and over time the seal will leak and will no longer suction the coolant from the overflow tank, hence why it is full. I have had to replace the upper radiator reservoir on both of my 91's.
