Okay, my C4, a 1994 has 150000 on the clock, and I had the water pump, optispark, plugs and wires replced this weekend. The opti was still the original, and it was working fine. The waterpump had started to have a slight leak which was the reason for the whole job. also on a funny note, one of the spark plugs was still the original, all others had been replaced, I guess they felt it was too hard to get to that last one, shame on them....
anyway, moral of the story, the optisparks can work well and be reliable if you do not try and pressure wash the engine!!!!
Also, my stock one was still a non vented one, while the replacement one I got is vented!!
persoanlly I think there were two issues, one was opperator error, the other was the infamy, in other words something was wrong so the shop went straight to the opti. along with other things. I am glad that my new one has the vent, however I did go with the MSD, I know some have said bad things about the MSD but they make alot of real good products and I was willing to bet this will be no exception. We have to keep in mind this is still just a distributor just in a funky spot...
i had 142,xxx on the clock when i replaced the original opti on my 94. they have an undeserved bad reputation. your more likely to have a fuel pump or starter go bad after 140,000 miles
I wonder just how many opti "failures" are / were User Error?

Just over 118K miles on my '96, and still has the original Opti.
And I have washed the engine plenty of times.
