Hello, got one of my first questions on my just acquired '92. This is my first C4 with the optional performance axle (RPO G92) and was wondering what kind of gas mileage should I expect out of it? It's currently getting about 18-19 MPG now. My other C4's seemed to get about 25 sometimes 28 MPG. I drive mostly on the hi-way since I live out in a rural area. Also I'm not lead footed and drive the car fairly easy and it's not a daily driver. Also is the performance axle any beefier or is it just in the different ratio gear set?
Thanks in advance!
First of all, is it a stick or auto. A stick will have the Dana 44 which is the heavy duty. What gears do you have? When you say performance I relate to 3:07's. That is what gm called the upgrade. Different gears will give you gas mileage difference.
Oops! Sorry kimmer it's an auto.
I'm not sure what the ratio is as I just found out it had this option by checking the RPO's on the center console inside cover. I haven't had this '92 for very long at all. I'm guessing it's the 3:07's like you stated
Yes, I knew that the different gears sets will affect the mileage but maybe someone could chime in too (with the RPO G92's) and tell me what they are getting on average.
In other words just trying to get an idea about how much of a MPG drop I can expect with the performance axle compared the the regular gear sets.
Being an automatic, the G92 axle will be 3:07 gears which is RPO G44. My 90 has G92/G44 and is an automatic with the base suspension. As far as gas mileage is concerned, the highest I gotten is 27.7 mpg. That's at speeds between 65 and 70. Around town it's around 17 mpg. This is a stock L98 with only a K&N filter. Hope this helps.
I have an automatic 1992 with the 3.07 rear end ratio. On the freeway I can get about 25 and in town about 14. Not quite as good as my 2002 Z06 which gets 31 on the freeway and 18 in town.
There was no G92 option for stick cars with the D44 ; you got what you were given
Only time a optional ratio was available with stick was in 84 when all had the D36 diff
Thanks guys!!
At least now I know "about" what to expect now.
FWIW it also has the the Select Ride handling package too.
The car's only got 50k on the clock and seems like it was well taken care of.
So far and nothing wrong with it except some very small stuff such as the side glass weather strip and a rear window shock strut that I've already replaced.
I'm just so glad to be a Corvette owner again (and a member of this great forum).
Seems like you don't realize how great these cars are and miss them until your without one and you wish you never had sold it.
I sold my last '92 (red) to a man that was a member here on the Corvette Forum. He lived in Houston TX and at the time I lived in Carrollton TX.
I sure wish if he was around he could let me know how my previous 92 is doing.
I had a 1990 L98 with auto and standard rear, 22 mpg was the norm with mixed city and highway operation. Traded on a 1995 auto with performance rear and LT1, now I get only 20 mpg, lost a good two miles per gallon. Definate performance increase.
