Default Insurance Question

First post. Hopefully first of many...

Ok anyway, I'm 18, and I've honestly never ridden in a Corvette. My dad bought a new '74 right after college and sold it when I was born. He showed me some of his old books and it was instantly my dream car lol. I'm drivin the family van now, but next month I get to buy a car. I've got enough to buy a C4, and I really want to, but I don't wanna be completely broke in the process(I know, I'm a weenie, sorry). The thing that will make me broke isnt the car, it would be the insurance. Does anybody have any experience will trying to get a Corvette insured as a college student at 18? Also does anybody know how rates would compare with a C4 v. a late 3rd or early 4th gen camaro. Also vs. a 5.0 Mustang (sorry again). So if anyone can help me out I'd really appriciate it. Thanks.

Dude;
My daughter is 18 and she's listed as the principle driver on our '85 Vette.
She has liability insurance only. We are taking the hicky ourselves if the thing gets snagged by us (her), or if it gets swiped....(install kill switch). She is a 4 point student and a Valedictorian, unblemished driving record, but is not able to get some of the discounts available Because it's a sports car. Her premium is around $500 every Six mo. Call your insurance company before you buy.
They'll be glad to tell you.

Most insurance company's play a game where they take the youngest driver in the house and put him/her in the most expensive or highest risk car just to get the rates up. Even if that person will never drive that car. Don't let them play that game(although you'll have to since you actually will be driving it).

A Z28/Trans Am will cost more because they are listed as High Performance where the Corvette is a Sports Car.

I'm a little pissed at my insurance company since they just raised my rates for no apparent reason.

It cost me about $3000 a year for all four of my cars. I get a multi car discount, but the comprehensive and collision on the two vettes is what kills me.

Each vette is about $1000 each for full coverage, my truck is about $600 and my MOPAR is about $400, they have only liability.

Unfortunately since I took out a loan for the second vette, I have to have full coverage. The minute I pay it off, I'm dropping it down to liability only. Why? Because I race it and if I wreck it, I don't want my rates going up because of a claim. If I wreck it, it's my own fault and I'll pay to fix it. Why let the insurance company bother you with questions you'll have to lie to answer?
I have a very good friend who owns a Corvette Junkyard, so I can get parts for pretty cheap.

Basically keep your driving record clean, don't go speeding and running stop signs and stuff.
You won't be able to get away from being young with a sports car, but if you play it smart, your rates will only go down.

OK I rule this topic!!! Bro I'm 19 and I totally feel ya. How we did it in our family is this: I'm listed on a 64 Stang b/c it's a classic car and classic car ins. is waaaaaay cheaper than anything else. Everyone else is on their own vehicles and the my Vette is listed as a Recreational vehicle. This is not always do able but is most certainly the cheapest route. The other way to do it like my friends if you can't get a classic is to put you on like your Dad's car and him on your's, and yet again since your in the family your automatically put on the ins. list to drive any of the cars including the VETTE!!! I go to school at OU and my family lives in Dallas, but it still works. Give me an email at XtremeVette420@aol.com or IM me and I'll give you more details. Good Luck

When I buy the car, it will be in my name, not my parents. My dad says if it's my car, I get my own insurance, so basically this is a by myself thing, so none of the claiming it was someone else's car tricks will work. I figure the fact that I'm not backed by my parents will raise the insruance a lot. Otherwise a figure like $500 a month is amazing compared to what i was expecting. I already have one speeding ticket under my belt, so that won't help. I figure if I can get a $2000 a year rate then I'll be set. I know someone thats 18 and drives a "pimped out" Integra thats shellin out $4000 a year. That's 3 part time jobs for him, I won't have that much time to work when I'm in school.

LMAO man actually....I'm currently 21 and had my vette for about 6 months now. The insurance is so kissin high on me you wouldn't believe it. MY car is modified at level 3 and I have to hide my NOS from those with the power to make me get rid of em. LMAO that's why they're interchangeable..............but shhhhhhhhhhh.:) LoL actually the way I get away with it is through my parents insurance. They both hve perfect driving records for over 40 years and since I'm a college student and haven't had any probs myself they do give me a break with allstate. I know......one of the worst for young peeps. It isn't really until you're 25 when they give you another break I heard......but currently I pay around 220 a month even though it's done semi-annually. If I wasn't on their policy and on my own.................my car is a vette AND under high performance so I'd be payin though the butt............some places tried to get me for bout 6-700 a month(balanced out) if I was on my own insurance wise. SO try and get group rates and poopie ...................unfortunately this way you might scare the poopie outta your parents with you on their policy.............just like I did............but hey what's NITROUS in a Corvette without a little terror every now and then? :)

Well, not too much input here but I can say that to my knowledge the camaro/firebird or mustang :U would cost more to insure. I always thought it was because a lot of immature people drive those and end up doing stupid things and becoming statistics....but maybe its the "performance car" identity. Anyway, I am not a young buck like you but I was 23 when I got my Vette and I kept the insurance down by listing it as a "recreational use" vehicle :blueangel: and having a higher deductible. Good luck finding one and remember, when you have that much power, theres no need to show it off (not too much anyway).....and you'll get plenty of opportunities with your friends and their camaros and stangs wanting to race.

around $500 sounds about right for full coverage. i am 18 and i pay $90 a month for my 85 fiero GT. that is just with liability. i dont even have any tickets or wrecks. i think mine will be around $400 a month when i get my C4.

Default 21 yr old Ranting about insurance

Great, just great. All these years of hard work, doing my part, busting **** to work while in college. Now I want a Corvette. But some snot-nosed insurance secretary thinks I'm a danger to society, despite my perfect driving record and credit record, because of the statistics made by the rest of the world. So I have to pay $400 bucks a month fee to enjoy it, but I still would have to watch my **** 24/7 or else the traffic ***** will bump up the fee. (Yeah I know, welcome to the real world right?) Way to go America! This great land of lawyers. You've made for one bitter college student. Maybe I'll be able to afford insurance when I'm 25. I could just buy the vette and use it for a driveway decoration for now. Looks like I'll be dipping into those savings to waste money keeping up my Ford POS. Thank you for hearing my rant.

They need a checkbox on the insurance form:

Check one.
[_] Daddy paid for Corvette, and will buy you another if you wreck it.
[_] You paid with your own hard earned dollar.

Since my experience is from Texas, it may not apply to you. Also, I am insured with State Farm which may make a difference.

When my oldest son turned 18, I had 3 cars. The one the wife drove, the ricer I used for work, and a 72 Vette. When I went to my agent about putting my son on the policy he told me to insure my son on the Vette since it was the oldest and would be the cheapest. The premiums for him were a little over $100/mo. They stayed this way till he turned 21 and then they went down by about 1/2. The story of the second son is basically the same, but the oldest car by that time was a 97. His premiums were close to $200/mo. He is now 23 and the premiums are around $100.

By the way, my oldest bought a 76' Vette when he was 18 and it was in his name and the premiums did not go up.

I wish my dad would let me stay on his policy, it seems like it would be so much cheaper. $500a month =$6000 a year = way too much after dropping 8-9k on the car. Not lookin good...

I would love to hear you got a Vette but at 18 I know what I would do with it... I would be in jail... Man the things I did at that age... Any way back to the subject, when I was 18 I got me a truck, strapped my self down with a big payment (big compared to my income) and the insurance cost busted me... I messed up my credit and ended up paying 20% intrest on my next truck. Busted butt to fix my credit and now I have my Vette. I am now 28 and pay $75.00 on my truck and $73.00 on my Vette per month for insurance... Think about everything before buying... or you may regret it later. The Vette will always be there..... Damn now I sound like my old man did when I was your age... I wish I would have did what he told me. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm 16 and just got my first vette - a 89 6-speed. The insurance with Allstate is about $940 ever six months. Before, I was driving a Toyota Avalon, and was paying $880 - so its not much worse for me (Full coverage).

I'm 19(gonna be 20) and have a clean driving record and a student discount, and from AAA, I was quoted with around $1800 for 6 months, so $300 a month insurance. SO, what we did was have my mom take out a seperate policy with the vette and our 93 Saturn SC2, and it's not only like...$1000 every 6 months. I'm not listed anywhere NEAR the vette. (Even though I make way more than enough to pay the full price, but why?) I think what it is, is a scam to get kids not to drive Corvette's, cuz MOST kids deserve to drive honda civic's because they can't drive worth a can of beans (then there's that 10% of us that do, and we pay dearly for it) If I could do it again...I dunno. When I turn 26 though, I'm getting a FEW vettes, cuz 26 is the age where the insurnace says "Ok, we're done fudgepacking you, you don't have to pay much for insurance anymore on ANY car you want". Hell, I may even get a freakin ferrari!
P.S.- If you only get liability on a Corvette...haha, good luck, most insurance companies WON'T do Liability on a Corvette...and if you do..well, you got more money than me friend, cuz in the end, if you get hit, good luck on getting it fixed with liability.

   WOW do you really beleave that? 25 is not crap... I only got like a 25% cut at that age... Wake up and smell the toast burning, insurance is a scam unless you use it and that will cost you, cost you big. The only way to get cheaper insurance is to get older without tickets and to stay with a company for a long time..

yep

EDIT: Thats also including a multiple-car discount and a good-student discount. I have also never been in a wreck or gotten a ticket of any kind. I am soon going to take some sort of online "defensive driving" class (as if you can drive defensively in a 'vette :D) and that should lower my premium a bit.

I got my Vette when I was 18, and started paying $2400 a year for it. Within a year, it was down to $2k, and now I am down to around $1600 (at 22). Get good grades, keep out of trouble, and dont get any tickets..
