Default shifting speeds

i have a 1990 L98 6-speed vette and my tach doesnt read correct. i can shift fine by sound but would like to know at what speeds in MPH should i shift into 2nd 3rd and on to get the maximum performance out of every gear

Shift before it flattens out We all have different gear sets so MPH indication is moot.

The gear ratios in the transmission are the same throughout the years. If you know your rear end gear ratio and your tire size, assuming your engine is stock, we can give you some pointers. The L98 will certainly rev beyond the point of making any useful power.

One little problem though, even you know the best theoretical speed to shift at, the speedo can't update as fast as the car can accelerate so it's kinda hard to judge by that.

I have a rather simple solution.

Fix the tach.

Which also can't update as fast as the car can accelerate.

To the OP, if you can figure out your final drive ratio and post your tire size I've got a spreadsheet that will show your road speed at any given rpm in any gear. You might find it handy someday.

Well, apparently my last post was offensive.

If you want to tape a spreadsheet to your dash, go for it but the answer is simple. If you want to know when to shift, fix the tach. Doing it by speed is not the right answer no matter how anybody tries to spin it.

Maybe just maybe the problem with the tach is going to be very costly to fix such as requiring a whole new cluster and he doesn't have the money right now. In the mean time he wants to get some idea what his revs are based on road speed.

It's simple math and it's not an unreasonable thing to ask.

It may not be the BEST answer, but it is a REASONABLE answer until such time as he can fix the tach.

If you don't have a tach and can't do it by ear, the REASONABLE answer is not to try to bang through gears at max RPM.

You are assuming that there is only one reasonable answer. If you actually look at the numbers and do a little bit of thinking and learning, you might be able to learn more about what the car is telling you by the sound. More knowledge is never a bad thing.

This is beyond stupid.

It's simple. There is a right way and a wrong way. Choose which ever you wish. If you think that taping a spreadsheet to your dashboard is good enough. Go for it. If you decide that you want to do it the right way, there are plenty of folks here with the knowledge to help.

If you have a performance rear end, it is different than not. Your end could get hurt by using MPH.

Hmm, they listen to the engine. And they get a feel for what road speeds work for what gears. What an ingenious concept.

ts not safe to tape a spreadsheet to the dash board. Now you dont know the speed and voltage.

Tape it to the windshield, like a HUD.
