Default Ac

I would like some thought on this. My car is a 90 vert. and yesterday I hit 30000 on miles. The car has the org. ac system and it works perfect. The question is, It has R-12 in it. Should I talk to a shop to change it to 134 before something goes wrong or just use it like normal until something breaks. My thought was at the cost of R-12 maybe a company would want to recover the R-12 and do the swap at no charge.

Don't touch it if it is working fine. No shop is going to do it for free anyway.

I totally agree with VETTEMED. Save your money for something else.

What they said, plus based on my experiences getting my Mustang converted, it's not as efficient. It doesn't seem to blow as cold and barely keeps the car comfortable on really hot days.

And don't let the lack of R12 worry you... I don't live far from you, and I've got over 30lbs on hand... but if your system isn't leaking, it's a non-issue.

I have heard that R12 is no longer available because the sale of R12 has been made illegal. I don't know how true that is.

Several years ago I ran low on freon and went to an AC shop. The guy wheeled out this cart with a label that said R134. I told him it was R12 and he wheeled out a different cart and recharged it.

Nope. Perfectly legal to sell it. If sold in the can or cylinder, the buyer must be licensed by the EPA. If installed in a vehicle system, no such license is needed by the buyer.

It IS illegal to manufacture it. that's why prices went up, the supply that currently exists, is all that there will ever be.

Get your license here: www.epatest.com and buy all the R12 you want. It'll still be cheaper than anything else you do when it comes to rebuilding it. Keep an eye on the hood above the compressor. The shaft seal on the Nippodenso compressor is usually the first thing to go, especially after 10 years. If you see compressor oil, time to fix it. Seal kits are about 50 Bucks, but you'll need to empty it and replace the Accumulator, as well as check for junk in the orifice,

Not to hijack but it appears the seal is out on mine, where can you pick up a seal kit?
