Not necessarily a waste, I'm seriously considering putting an LT1 in my trick.
You find wrecked vettes,Camaro's,Trans Am's, Impala's and Caprices on ebay all the time. Why not take the motor and use it for something else? Better than it sitting in a junkyard.
It's always good to have a spare motor on a stand in the garage. If you ever used to put together plastic model kits, well, consider that you've just moved up to bigger, cooler kits that make loud noises and cost more money. And the one in the garage can grow in fits and starts as you get the money for that Lunati crank, those JE pistons...etc.
it's a popular swap for the 4x4 crowd. i've seen a few in jeeps. with the low-low-low gearing they can climb a tree!
Being a former member of the 4x4 crowd, it is actually pretty common to see TPI motor swaps due to their advantage in hill climbing and off-camber situations. They don't have the float bowl/fuel starvation problems common to most carbureted engines.
Why is it a waste? Because it's not in the all-mighty corvette? Please. I think V8 swaps in S10s are great. You can bet that I'll do one some day soon.
