Default Need another spare set of keys

Question

Where is the best place to buy blanks and which ones to get

They have different blanks depending on year and kind, correct?

I have a 1994. (it's a ZR-1 but I don't think that matters)

Thanks for any input

Cheers

David

I got mine at the dealer to be sure the resistance was right and I could try it right away.

IIRC, there are 15 different resistance values for the pellet in the ignition key. A GM dealer should be able to read the resistance value in Ohms and duplicate the keys. Some dealers may require proof of ownership of the car (registration address must match your driver's license or something similar)

Some locksmiths also carry the GM pellet key and can also make copies.

You can get hosed by a dealer, or, you can just measure the ohms on your existing key and then order the correct blank on-line, and have it cut anywhere. That's how I did mine years ago, but I can't remember the website. Shouldn't be hard to find one though.

still thats cheap for something that you know will work and not damage anything. the last thing you need is a poor cut key to damage your ignition cylinder

If you've a functioning key by all means drop by a dealer and ask that they check the resistance with a VATS Interrogator. If they have a correct resistance in stock it should be inexpensive to duplicate provided the mechanical cuts are in good condition. If the key is mechanically very worn they will require ID's, registration etc to inquire GM for the information. The ID is a GM requirement!

Ordering the key on-line? Why? You need to expect that you'll receive "what you ordered" - "wait" and maybe "wait" again! Cut anywhere? What happens to your "cheap key" if it's mis-cut?

There's no particularly good argument for "not starting at the dealer"!!

Hosed? Perhaps if you patronized the dealer your experience might improve!

There's only one "keyway" for C4 VATS ignition but the "keyway" for the doors traditionally changed year to year. MY's 91+ could be the exception and are all H keyways. The "keyway" for your door will be identified by a stamped letter on the head of the key. Yours, likely an H !!
