Default Service Manuals

Which service manual is the best manual to purchase? There are several out there, some are shop manuals and some are service manuals. Some are 1 volume and some have several volumes. I'm currently trying to troubleshoot some issues with my '92 LT1 and the manual that I have covers too many models (Chilton). Does anyone have some good advice for me?

You can find the real Factory Service Manuals (referred to as FSM's) published by Helm, Inc. on their website. Sometimes the FSM's will pop up on the C4 Parts For Sale section of the Forum. Try the auction site too.

The FSM's are year-specific and they are 2-volume sets. These books are the same ones that were used by service techs at dealerships. These books cover all sorts of information that includes descriptions of error codes and how to diagnose problems. There are complete electrical schematics by section and component locator drawings. Driveability diagnosis/repair and emissions are in a separate book, usually Book 2.

The Chilton and Hayes books you see at parts stores are pretty much worthless and do contain some wrong information.

You absolutely correct about the chilton manual. I'm tossing it out. Thank you very much for your response

Note that you can get the factory service manual on a CD as pdf's, usually on fleabay for considerably less than the paper manual. You can then print out the pages you need. Also, I have the FSM on my laptop that I usually have with me when traveling in the Vette. Nice to have backup in case I need to look up something without having to carry two LARGE printed books.

In my experience with Chilton's and Haynes, I find they make EXCELLENT kneepads for doing any kneeling carwork!

Since it's Sunday I'll sing my song again: The FSM is an absolutely required for any serious work but it is written for people who know their way around wrenches and things mechanical. Like drinking out of a fire hose. Haynes is a suitable primer, a learning tool, for beginners. I been bending wrenches for a long time and still open my beat up Haynes for some simple tasks. My FSM is coming apart it has been used so much.

A primer is not much help when it gives you wrong information.

It would make a lot shorter list if you told us what they got right

The one place where Hayne's is definitely better is that it contains pictures, not just diagrams/sketches. One of the difficulties sometimes with the FSM is trying to figure out where something actually is, particularly electrical relays, etc. Obviously, I am not talking about engine parts and drive train but additional items that may be inside or under the hood, on the right or left.

Also, sometimes the FSM does make doing some repairs (such as changing a headlight) sound more complicated than they really are. I have not noticed any particular errors but would not be surprised since the Vettes do change from year to year and the Haynes manual does not necessarily reflect all of these. I use both but mostly the FSM.

I just purchased the Helms manuals directly from Helms (ST 364-941) for my 94. They cost me 100 dollars and are worth every penny. I actually recieved 3 books--Book 1 is actually broke into 2 seperate books and book 2.

Mine are not red like I expected but they are the same books. (mine are green)

If you are not in a hurry, eBay is the best place to grab a bargain on an FSM. You have to look every day and its easy to forget. After I read your post, I checked eBay for 92 Red Cover FSMs. Didn't see any worth recommending. I did see a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette Electrical Diagnosis Service Shop Repair Manual on which I made an offer and ended up buying it for $25.50 plus $4.95 shipping. I was pleasantly surprised that I could use my eBayBucks on the purchase (which I always seem to have a hard time using otherwise as they have an expiration date). So for a little more than $21, I completed my two volume set of FSMs for my 1990 (the 1990 Red Cover shop manual was purchased last December for $45 shipped) . Back in February, I bought a two volume Red Cover set for my 1991 for $75 plus shipping. All the volumes I purchased are in great condition. Based on my experience, you should be able to snag the two volume Red Cover set for your 1992 for $75 plus shipping. Whatever you pay, its well worth the price.

Will the Shop Service Manual CD's give you the same information?

Thanks!

The FSM's on CD that I got for my '88 contains the FSM in pdf format. It actually also came with a copy of the Owner's Manual and a number of magazines and other reference materials. You do want to make sure you get it all, and I suggest that the pdf version is best.
