Default fuel gauge 1/2 full

My 1988 fuel gauge shows full until about 150 miles, then starts working and shows half a tank. It seems to be working as I drive more miles.
Anybody have any ideas on why?

Probably sending unit needs to be cleaned. Easy job, I believe there's a tech tip on it.

It may be hitting on the side of the tank, stopping i from full travel. Check to make sure the tank liner isn't bubbled, and of course, for full and free movement of the arm.

Normal. My C4 travels a good 100 miles before the indicator starts to move. They didn't get any better with the C6. In fact most cars have this issue..

You might want to stop at step 4 and use some electrical contact spray cleaner on the metal portion of the connectors. Plug it back together and see if that fixes the problem.

Mine was acting wierd. Removed the pumps & had a look around the inside of the tank - found a red shop rag floating around in there! I suppose that "might" have had something to do with erratic readings...spoze?

Though I'm not sure I'd trust the clown that wrote that tech article. He's been known to stay up late howling at the moon.

I've found odd things in gas tanks too.
