I used to won a 1986 pace car conv...went on fire Now I'min the market for a 1989 C4 Red Conv with white roof...A guy that is 70 is selling it...it looks great,,,only catch is that it has 121,000 miles. He's really on top of the car...he wants $6900 for it...what doi you think I should offer him and is even worth it. Headlights work, update corvette chrome rimes, new stereo and new dash....looks soooo clean...he sent me 26 pictures. I'm an Operation Desert Storm Vet that doesn't want to get taken...any advice would help
(my 2 cents) when a car is that old, mileage becomes a secondary issue. you have to go by condition here, everything cosmetic and the mechanics. look at the big ticket items - paint, interior, convertible top, weather stripping, etc. mechanical issues, tires, brakes, exhaust, shocks, fuel system, etc. does it start and stop, okay? any funny noises? personally, if the thing looks like it's been well taken care of, and not needing any big ticket items, i don't think his asking price is too far off, but anything you can get him to come down is a bonus. remember, you're dealing with a 26 year old car. expect that it's going to need some things, and plan on doing the wrench-bending yourself. if its really nice, i'd go in at $6K myself, but around here, you'll get answers like "it's only worth $2000", which is absurd.

Go to the "events and regional" section of this Forum. Choose the appropriate location and ask to have someone go test drive the car for you and give you a full report. Pay them for their time. Their advice could save you a ton of money and heartache.
I have been on both ends of the same situation and it worked out good for me.
He probably doesn't want to get "taken" either. You, or someone you trust, that knows something about a C4 needs to take a look at it and test drive it. If he's had it for a while, chances are he's an enthusiast and has taken good care of it. It could be a good/reasonable deal. Post some of the pictures and you'll get a lot more opinions.
Thank you for your service. If your heart is set on a vert, why not contact this forum member? He is a senior citizen that is having problems engaging the clutch on his 95 LT1 vert and recently asked for an idea what his car is worth. Here is the jump: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-g...car-worth.html
PM him and ask for some pics and more history.
I agree with Joe, as long as everything checks out and is in overall good shape, the seller's price is about right. Go ahead and offer him $6K with cash in hand. Good luck!
121,000 miles is not a "catch" on a 1989 Vette. That's only 5260 miles per year. LOW if you ask me. It's a red convertible with a white top! Well worth $6900.00. I think it might be an insult to offer $6000.00. Try $6500.00. If he tries to take advantage of you we'll ALL go over and take corrective action for you. THANK YOU for your military service to us all!

Why shipping? Where is the car located and how did you find out about it? Hopefully not Craigs List.
