Need help from experienced Florida vette drivers..
Live orn FL west coast, south of Tampa,
New to me 92 coupe will be needing tires soon.... now has 5 year old Yokohama rears and Falken fronts...ride feels harsh.
Need advice from florida vette owners about replacement 275x40x17 tires.
Drive car 2-3 days per week, nonaggressive, mostly around town, but plan to do more highway.
Looking for relatively quiet, comfotable ride with good handling on hot roads, and especially on rainy roadways.
Cost and wear important but i know I need to be realistic. but would like Florida specific info.
Have reviewed many threads
Any suggestions,,Nittos,,Contis,Michelin...o thers?
This one is easy and there is no need to be a Florida resident to give you an answer.
Non aggressive driver looking for tires. Buy the cheapest tire or the quieter ones. Michelins are a very nice
cruise tire, they are not the cheapest, but they are smooth.
Nittos, GY or BFG would be an overkill for your driving needs.
Look at it on the bright side, your Vette is not a garage queen.
I have Sumitomo all the way around on mine. Never had any issues, they stick good in fair weather and I dont drive aggressively in the rain. I have heard they dont perform well in the wet but havent experienced any bad characteristics.
With that, my favorite all time tire I've EVER driven on is the Michelin PS2. It's expensive, but you get what you pay for. Excellent traction, EXCELLENT ride quality, and SUPER quite. I've also driven, with confidence, at higher speeds on wet courses.
my son lives in sarasota, and is running firestone wide ovals (275x40x17) on his 85. he drives the 85 pretty much as a DD. no issues with the ride, handling, noise, etc, on those hot florida roads. i've run a set before and the firestone's are good for 40-50K miles. overall, not a bad tire for the buck.
Biggest problem I had when living in Naples was wet traction. Basically hydroplaning during afternoon monsoon rains, standing water etc. Both of the C4's & the C5 wanted to swap ends.
Also the old 2 lane roads contain lots of coral, read "glass" = slick.
After several brands of tires tried General Exclaim UHP's & they work well. Summer tire with good wet traction + they are quiet dependent on road surface. Have Generals on the 90 Vette & the wife's Jag.
