Good day to all I just bought a 1986 Corvette ( my first corvette ) with a 700r4 in it at WOT throttle it seems to take a very long time to upshift and today it went all the way to 6000 rpm + before I got off the gas and then it finally shifted. I dont know if this is normal? I checked the fluid level it is OK and the fluid doesnt have any smell or weird color. If I do need a rebuild any suggestion in the NY area since I live in Canada and the Corvette what not a popular so finding a shop that knows what its doing is going to be hard. thx Chris
My '86 would not shift to second gear at WOT unless I backed off on the throttle. I solved that problem by putting a '89 700r4 in my car (donated by a friend). As far as I know, the only way to adjust the shift points is to change the springs and/or weights in the governor. I bought a kit with various springs and weights several years ago, but never installed it. It's a B&M and has all the gaskets, pins, clips, etc. included.
I recommend adjusting the TV cable. It isn't directly related to shift points, but you can burn your frictions if the cable is too loose. The TV cable increases the pressure inside the transmission as you mash down on the gas pedal. If the pressure is too low the clutches will slip and burn.
Here's a pic (with a carburetor bracket, but the idea is the same):
Push in on the D-shaped part (right hand thumb in the pic -- the spring is pretty strong, I use a screwdriver) and push the TV cable HOUSING to the rear (away from the throttle body -- left hand in the pic). Let off the D-shaped part and move the throttle linkage to the WOT position. You will hear several clicks as the cable housing is pulled out of the adjuster.
