I placed two orders from two different companies in Ohio. They both confirmed packages shipped (about the same time) One was shipped UPS the other FedEx...Which one you think will get here first? They are both under 5 lbs. Destination Connecticut
UPS is very slow, we get people emailing us asking if we shipped their order from our website yet, and we usually do it that same day! We just added 2nd day air from the US postal service (post office). The post office is the way to go if you can. They have alot of resources and have deadlines to meet and seem to be very efficient.
I just received a new GM glass Targa Top for a 91 ZR1. Shipped via Fedex Ground. .. Yep its broke .. :( The plastic has an 8" crack along the front edge. the shipper for what ever reason only insured the package for 500 bucks. So far Fedex seems to be willing to repair or pay the claim. It was packed extremely well so they must have dropped it.
No idea on how to fix the damage, but I know that FedEx is REALLY good about paying up on their claims. I had a package that was supposedly left by the front gate of a driveway(out in the country). I'm sure it didn't help that the box said SONY all over it. I was only shipping brake calipers for a motorcycle but the buyer didn't recieve the package. I didn't know whether to believe the guy or not but FedEx paid out the $100 I had only covered them. If someone did take the box, when they opened it up, I'm sure it was not what they expected~ no sony.
 My trailer hitch was shipped FedEx...I paid $7 extra for it...it took forever. When it finally showed up at 6:40 in the evening, it was by a guy wearing a Fed-Ex Ground shirt.
FedEx air is cool, FedEx ground sucks. Ecklers is a rip-off. :smash:
My UPS guys is great, can't say that about Fed-Ex. Those bozos always demand a sig, so it takes at least 1 extra day. I love it when they post another reminder on my door and fail to notice I signed the one they left the day before. I even filled out a signature wavior, but they don't seem to care. For home delivery, UPS is the best.
Im a Manager for FedEx Ground and have read most of the threads. Very Interesting! Most people dont understand the full concept of the FedEx companies so I'll through some light to ya. FedEx Express (Air) only competes against UPS air products. FedEx Ground competes against UPS Standard. IF you look at pure numbers, both ground services are about the same. FedEx Ground basically "follows" UPS when the ground business started. Meaning, FedEx ground will never do a price increase until UPS has an increase. If UPS goes up 5%, so does Ground.
Here is a major difference between the two: UPS drivers are hourly employees. FedEx Ground uses Contractors. So, if a package is left at your front door and is stolen (which happens a lot), the cost of that package comes out of the contractors wallet. If the same situation happens to UPS, UPS corporate pays for it. This is why FedEx Ground Contractors want a signature. I work on the dock and see a lot of expensive stuff come through here. Actually today, there were some wheel/tire combo from Direct Tire come through here and a contractor asked if he should leave them. I couldnt see the wheels, but they were mounted on Nitto 555's, and I told him NOT to leave them, due to the area that these wheels were going to.
Here is something else to consider. It is the 5 year time for UPS to go into Contract negotiations with the Teamster Union. They are expecting a work slowdown/stopage. This is suppose to start in mid June.
I have parts shipped by UPS and FedEx and have had items damaged by both. Every package that is shipped through FedEx Ground is insured for $100. If you order that targa top, for example, and the top is worth $1200, the shipper has to declare the value of the top for that amount. If they dont, they (the shipper) is out of everything but the $100. What happens a lot, and is crappy, is that the shippers pass the damage cost to the customer. Where I work, we usually have 5 damages a day. We deliver more than 8,000/day. So, damage frequency is not too high.
Just keep in mind that both companies have good & bad workers. My UPS driver is a total you know what. She had her van parked in my driveway so I went up to her and asked if she had anything for me. She said "no, I just need to use the phone, do you have a problem with that?" Uh, I guess not..
