I leaned on the lid to my console for my '86 and broke the plastic on the bottom side of the lid. Now it won't latch. No big deal, except there's this light that comes on when the lid is open, and I'm afraid it will drain my battery. Which of the following ideas sounds best?
1. Take out the lightbulb for the console;
2. Pull the fuse (hestitate to do this because I don't know what else is on the same fuse);
3. Replace the lid to the console storage bin;
4. Go back in time and convince the GM engineer to shift the funds spent on a console storage bin light that nobody wants over to making a console lid that one can lean on without breaking.
Don't remove the fuse. Take out the bulb if your that worried. I have a broken lid too but it stays closed enough that the light doesn't come on. Can you use the key to lock the lid down? That should solve the problem. I can lock the lid on my 92 separately.
Thanks for the advice. I'll try unscrewing the bulb.
If I did go back in time, I'd be too busy trying to prevent my own mistakes to worry about anybody else's. However, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't listed to anyone's advice (even my own).
Do the bulb. And, Yes it will drain the battery. Took my tire gauge out of the console and left the lid up.Thought it was part of the auto-shut-off ckt.but it's not....3 days later, dead battery.
Is it just the plastic hook piece (latch) that moves back and forth on the lid? If so we have those available and they are easy to replace. Here is a link to he part.
Second, there should be some wires running out of the back corner of the console lid that tuck back in between the carpet and lower console. If you gently pull those up from the lower console area, there is a plug that will let you just unplug the light.
Third, we have complete console doors available new in many colors. Here is a link to a red one for example.
I just posted this lid repair I did on another console thread. I fixed mine with 1/4" plywood. The plastic lid is two pieces and I replaced the underside of it with the plywood part after carefully inletting the plywood so the plastic part right under the pad laid nice and flush with the plywood. You can just about stand on my lid now without any problems. Wasnt hard at all and took maybe 2 hrs not including paint drying time.
There is a mercury switch built in to the light assembly. It will shut off the light if the console lid is in the closed position (meaning horizontal -- it doesn't have to be latched).
