Waterpump
Found my leak finally. Had some time today and got the water pump off. The gaskets, which were installed 9 years ago with a new pump, were disintegrated. I'm surprised it didn't leak worse than it did.
Will probably put a new pump in when I put it back together.
Anyone think of anything I should be doing while apart?

Make your list as things are coming apart.
Hoses, especially the lower, power steering hoses and fluid, check the fuel lines as they connect to the rail, Idler pulley and tensioner, belt.

FWIW buy a NEW pump! No overhauls or rebuilds!
with this 100%. I have seen to many rebuilds leak from the start.. Im sure if they were done by someone who knew how , with quality parts, they would work fine..But it appears there all rebuilt with sub standard parts.....Get a Stewarts waterpump, all the guys that have them, like them......WW
(One) if your car is LT based, your choices are somewhat limited BUT if you have an earlier engine, spend the extra money and get a pump with a fully machined impeller...NOT a stamped sheetmetal "paddlewheel" impeller...not even if it has a sheet metal disc pop riveted to it; Weiand "Team G", amongst others, offer fully machined impellers and are all first rate pumps;
(Two) most high performance pumps will have the bypass circuit from the discharge into the suction side of the pump (it looks like an extra hole on the mounting ear of the pump) already deleted...if not, consider blocking, or at least restricting, this passage.
I just replaced my water pump on my 85 with an autozone special. The manual I used said four hour job...took me five years. I hope it doesn't go out soon.
Coach & WW are generally right here. However, the folks at Arthur Gould can rebuild your OEM pump and do a great job. They do alot of NCRS work, including mine, and I have never had or heard of anyone having a problem with their work.
But, as Coach said, I would not trust any other general rebuilders - AT ALL.

All fixed, no leaks. The gaskets were in such bad shape, it's a wounder it held water at all. I'm thinking when I replaced 9 years ago, I may have put on a sealer not made for the application. I have no other ideas on why this would happen
I also went with a regular new water pump purchased off the shelf. Cost $38.
I see absolutely no reason to spend hundreds on a fancy high efficiency WP. Machined impeller? I don't think so.
If your cooling system is clean and working right, there should be no problem.
