Having owned a 79 L82 a while ago then a 90zr1 which was fun when it decided it was in the mood to start. I was wondering if the avg mechanic can work on the lt1 or lt4 with ease. Since most guys looked at me like I was Charlie Sheen in the Wraith when they opened the hood of the zr1.Reason for ? looking to possibly purchase a normal c4.
Yes, the average mechanic can work on the LT1 and LT4 with relative ease. Some things won't be particularly easy such as spark plugs and wires and the optispark distributor, but there's not much that's really hard to do. The clamshell hood makes many jobs easier than they would be without that nice access.
As the former owner of an LT1 car and the current owner of a ZR-1, I don't think the LT1 and 4 are really any easier or harder than the LT5 to work on, just different. And there much fewer sources to get LT5 parts.

By far it's biggest feature when wanting to work on the engine, every mechanic I talked to loves the easy access to the engine the clam shell provides.
It's too bad GM didn't keep the design, but you can thank the insurance companies for whining that it was too expensive to replace.
I still own my 79 L-48 now I have a 92 C4. I'm just starting to learn how the computers and all the codes work. Turning wrenches is easy. Figuring out what's wrong is the hard part. At least for me.
Really, just remove the side gill panel, all will be revealed
Except when it just rained and you are parked in a puddle of water ...I dislike the fact that I have to lay on the ground to loosen the one nut near the rocker panel..
Also keep in mind that C4's are very reliable (at least the three I have owned) so turning wrenches isn't something you'll have to do frequently, except for normal maintenance assuming, of course, you buy a good one.

Haven't had that experience yet, but you did mention one important issue, that being loosen that bottom bolt only, do not remove it

Hey! Good thing I asked. Not only do I know the battery can be gotten out now but what not to do in the process. Probably well timed advice too. The battery looks to be getting old.
