Hello folks, I need to replace the injectors in my '90 L98 and would like your recommendation on what brand to buy. I see several brands being offered like Accel, Bosch and Delphi. Should I only consider new or are rebuilts OK at half the price? Thanks in advance.
For my 90 I called Jon at FIC and put in what he said and that was new stainless steel body delphi. My car runs great. I cant say what the other injectors will perform like. It was the first time for my car.
While you are at it I would fix your intake gasket leak. You will be half way there with the TPI apart.
Thanks for the heads up. Do you know where I can find a tutorial showing a step by step taking off the plenum, runners and manifold? I looked in my FSM but its not very descriptive. Some of those 40 torque sets look like a bear to get at.

Here is one Sammy did on the injector swap after that its just intake bolts and distributor. Make sure you put the distributor back in the same place. i would set the Veh at TDC before you start.Have you ever taken an intake off before?

Why would you take off the manifold to change injectors? You don't need to.
You can also take off the plenum without taking off the runners. It's a toss up on which way is easier.

Thanks for the tutorial...it's just what I need to do the job. I feel I have the mechanical ability to do it but being a senior the spirit is willing but the back is weak. I just finished rebuilding the headlight motors and getting in under the hood wasn't easy.
I replaced my injectors in my 91 2 years ago . I agree, Jon at FIC (fuel injection connection) was very helpful. He sold me refurbished Bosch injectors and they have worked out great , really improved the idle quality and performance of my car. Also Jon is in Cumming Georgia a good ole boy like me. The injectors are yellow and with my new yellow plug wires the engine looks great. If I knew how to post a pic I would but I don't yet. Don't fret a bout install , if I can do it anybody can. Just follow the FSM and the video from the other thread. I labeled EVERYTHING I took off the car and put them in baggies ( I tend to forget alot) . Good luck.
It is not a difficult task. Since you have the manual...you are in 90% better shape than most here on the Forum.
Be sure to label each hose, wire and bolt that you remove. Note that the bolts holding the runners to the intake are different lengths and there are a couple under the plenum that you might not know are there. This will save you headaches when you try and put things back together.
Also, get a couple of rubber push on plugs to plug the fuel lines. The feed line will leak if you don't plug it.

Go to an auto parts store and purchase a long ball tip allen wrench. Makes the job much easier.
Here is a pic of my 91 with the new Bosch IIIs from FIC. Good idea to lube up the O rings with Vaseline before installing:
Here they are with the fuel rail installed. Be sure to install the injectors into the fuel rail first and then seat them in the base next. Less chance of tearing an O ring that way. Jon also advised that it is OK to leave the upper retainer clips off. They were used at the factory as the fuel rail and injectors were lowered from above and the clips kept the injectory from falling out. Once the fuel rail is bolted down it has nowhere to go. I also think it was Jon that advised that the 4 bolts that hold the fuel rail to the base be coated with Loctite.
They are Torx bolts. Don't use Allen wrenches on them. The heads are hardened, but why take chances? Get the correct tools and do it right.
I broke one of the injector retainers so I left that one out. I figured it couldn't go anywhere. It leaked because the injector came part way out of the fuel rail because of the fuel pressure. I bought a new retainer at the dealer. I think it was $8 (outrageous markup on their part, but I wanted it fixed).
