Getting ready to do my first full trackday and the idea of having tow hooks was mentioned. Can anyone suggest tow points or where to mount temporary tow hooks for any unfortunate off track experiences?
The tiedowns point are already there from the factory. Look just behind the front wheels and just in front of the rear wheels. They are 'eyes' for attaching a hook, not the hook itself. Just don't wreck and you won't have to worry about them.
But if you are doing a track day, the tow guys don't need to be searching for a eye hole if the car is buried in a gravel pit. It needs to be exposed for quick removal of the car. Now if you are just doing an HPDE, then you don't need an exposed tow hook, just know where the eye holes are, just in case.
It's not easy mounting tow hooks to a C4. Because the front and rear bumper facias cover all of the steel parts of the frame, you would have to drill a hole thru them so you can bolt or weld on some sot of a hook.
Tow hooks (they are actually rings) should be red or orange in color and clearly visible. The factory shipping tie-downs are inboard and slightly above the suspension components and are very hard to get to even with the car on a flat surface.
Tow rigs at track day events will usually have some towing straps with hooks on them and the operators are pretty good at finding attaching points.
Mount a tow hook that will come through the rear license pocket. You'll have to design it and attach it in a way that it can be removed but it will work. Remember, you just need to be towed to the pits, not a hard tug.
Thanks for the input guys! I don't know if the mods will be put in for this event. In going to keep researching. But I'll have video and pics of the event when im done.
