My 90 with the six speaker bose has the rear speakers that are unplugged 'cause they only hiss. Very softly but they do. Is there a simple test for the amps and the relay? I only have a Chiltons at this point and naturally it really doesn't contain enough info.
Certainly I'd be much happier if the relay was the problem.
99% sure it's the amps. I'm thinking if it was the relay, the others would still be hissing with the rears disconnected. Toss the Chilton's and get a FSM.

Oh aren't you the bearer of good news.
It's funny about the FSM. It seems that the 1990 isn't carried anywhere. It'll be off to ebay for me I think.
Put an aftermarket in and keep the original in your garage if you so desire. With the Bose IMO, when problems start they just seem to continue. Did that on my '90 and never looked back
That's where a lot of us got ours. Money well spent.
I was under the impression that there's a relay for the rears and one for the fronts. I'm wondering also if the green capacitors on the boards will look burnt.

There's also a head unit underneath the dash towards the passenger side IIRC. I think the relays are part of the speaker. Have fun
rip the bose out and hang it from a tree. get yourself some half inch high density particle board and make some small enclosures and put some alpine/polk/cdtaudio/focal/........in there and a new headunit. might even be able to reuse the bose boxes. im just taking my 89s door boxes apart to put some 6 inch alpine coaxials in them
yes its a bitch to rewire the whole damn thing,,but worth every minute..I put 2 6 inch subs where the rear speakers used to be, a 4 channel 500 watt amp in the back, modded the front speaker pods to accept 6 1/4's, an Alpine CDA 117 with an Ipod headunit..and got rid of that damn carpeting they cover the speaker covers with, replaced with speaker cloth..that was a pain to do but what a difference..they say verts can't sound good...wrong..
as I posted before I went ahead and upgraded my bose system with a rebuild of the amps and the box under the dash. Would I do it again? I dont know. The speakers came with a life time warranty and the box 1 year. But there is a lot of info on here with with pictures of the new after market radios that are state of the art. I just wanted to keep my 90 vert original for now.
