From your description I suspect the Control Head's button contacts need to be cleaned. A fairly easy job for any one with just a little mechanical ability.

One additional suggestion: Use a towel under the Control Head when you disassemble it. That towel will prevent tiny screws and other parts from rolling onto the floor and disappearing!
