Default Parking Brake Cable slack?

New here. I have a 1993 40th 6spd.

When I parked this morning and applied the parking brake I heard a pop as I got towards the top and the parking brake handle was then moving completely freely with the parking brake unable to engage.

I was able to peer between the seat and door sill and saw what appeared to be and later confirmed was the parking brake cable.

I looked all over online to find a diagram to no avail. So I took the driver's seat out (first time, not as much a PITA as I figured) and began trying to figure out how and where the cable attached.

I figured out the point of failure, the cable appears to attach to a plastic(!!!) wheel and pulled through the slot in said wheel. I won't bother getting into my anger involving why they would use plastic for this part.

I am trying to figure out if there is a way to temporarily rig the cable up to the wheel, but in order to attempt this I need to know if I can get any extra slack with the parking brake cable inside the cabin temporarily in order to reach the slot in the plastic.

Is that the purpose of the large nut at the base of the cable?

*cliffs for the TLDR crowd*
Parking brake cable came off plastic wheel, need slack to attempt to put it back on. Is this done with the large nut at the base of the cable?

TIA

Hi,

You need to disabled the automatic adjuster and rotate the plastic wheel to get the cable reattached, but if the cable has pulled out the plastic wheel will have broken, time for new parking brake handle, I believe they are now discontinued, got mine from taber corvette for $50, takes about 20 minutes to fit, happened to me twice now.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the part number is by chance? Are there any aftermarket options that are not made of plastic?

Hi,

Sorry I don't know the part number, Corvette Central has a listing for it but the part is discontinued.
A parking brake handle from any c4 1988 onwards will fit, I believe the later ones were improved.
