Default No start solved

After having a No Start - luckily at home, I looked up posts and read FSM for several hours because it seemed to be a VATS problem. After all of that I determined the easiest way to see if it was the VATS or just the Lock Cylinder was to remove the Left Knee Panel and fine the wires coming from the Lock Cylinder with my key in and unplug the wires and see if my ohm meter read the key values. It didn't so I bought a new cylinder and put my spare key in it and plugged in the wire from the new cylinder and the car started.

Upon taking the old Lock Cylinder out I found that one of the wires was broken. After having new keys made I began the repair. Before I bolted the steering wheel back on, I decided to test it to see if the car would start so I hooked up the battery and it didn't start. It didn't make since so after thinking about what was different than when I originally tested the new Lock Cylinder, I realized that I had the Air Bag fuse out. Placed the Fuse back in and it worked!! By the way, the Fuse is labeled CRANK AIR BAG.

Just thought I would share this diagnostic tip along with my blunder so as to save someone else the hours I spent to correct this problem.

After I rebuilt my tilt hosing in my 91, it wouldn't start either. I got the 'SYS' message on the instrument cluster lcd. I then remembered I had the airbag fuse out for the steering wheel removal, and like yours, fired right up afterwords. Mine was not so labelled- probably thought to do so in later years due to diagnosis difficulties.

Thanks for posting. It will help someone. BTW, this also happened to me. I pulled the instrument panel in order to fix the tach. Because I was dropping the steering column, I pulled the airbag fuse. It wouldn't start (CCM error 16). When I reinstalled the airbag fuse, it started. Weird, but useful info for others.

on 91 and perhaps others, ecm gets power from the air bag circuit.
