There is, when your wheels are clean, a product by Armor All and Meguires now that will protect your wheels from Brake dust. It does work. Only warning is do not use it if autoxing or any track days. The stuff is flammable and when you get the brakes hot, it can ignite. Ask me how I know.

Tom, when I'm painting cars I use a green scotch brite pad to do the final scuff in the door jambs to remove any missed shiny spots. It will remove any gloss from paint or powder coat making the surface rough enough for the paint to stick or in your case brake dust.
