Ques re instrument cluster

If you replace the instrument cluster on a C4...does that change the miles on the odometer to whatever the new cluster has on it? If so, how do you ever know what you are buying miles wise?

What year? I think it does for some years, but I'm not sure if it is all of them.

The odometer is separate from the dash cluster

At least in 1990+, mileage is stored in the CCM. A new cluster will not change the miles displayed.
