Default Steering

Steering my Corvette is nothing like any of my other cars. It feels stiff. Not like no power and I assume it's stiff due to the performance nature of the car.

For instance. Palming the wheel during very low speed is not possible without risk to making a turn safely. Ya I know I shouldn't be doing that. But it's very easy in my other cars.

Is it just the nature of the Corvette and the wide tires? I have no perceived alignment problems. It drives straight and no funky wear on the tires and feels quite normal above 15 mph. It feels about the same as my wifes Dodge Avenger at speed. No vibes or anything else going on. No pump noises.

I don't know anyone else with a C4 so I could drive it and compare.

Sounds like a rack problem. Any silver shavings in the fluid?

That is the way they are, they didn't have speed sensitive steering in 1983 when the model was introduced. My 1990 felt the same as my currently owned 1995.

Ya but what does your 95 feel like? I've driven only one Corvette in my time on earth and it's my 90.

I have owned four C4's. None of those ever had the strg.
concern you do. My 96 Collector Edition is on the stiffer
end but it has the Z51 option with a different rack.
The 96 has a stiffer feel to the strg. than my 91 roadster with
the standard rack.

OK, I get it. I "had" the FX3 but I'm told that was only a adjustable shock package. I'll have to do some poking around. When my 82 Cougar had a rack problem there was a definate non-smoothness to it. Maybe it's just my perception or maybe something is amiss. I wish I had something to compare it to. It is very smooth lock to lock it just seems stiff. Again, nothing to compare it to.

I'm wondering, is there a filter in the steering system that could be getting clogged? In my receipts that came with the car there is nothing for a rack or pump during the last 22 years. Maybe a flush is in order.

Think what would happen at 100+ mph if you had sensitive steering.

It definately feels what one would expect of a performance car over 15 mph or so. I know how it feels at 100+ and it feels quite good and predictable. Awesome in fact.

I guess the 59 Lincoln Continental at 100+ could be an experience since there is no feel at all. Sitting still you can go lock to lock with a broken pinky finger with no problem.
