I know this topic has been gone over a thousand time but it seems like everybody else's car is different then mine, I pulled the headliner off to replace it with yellow vinyl, all of the other posts are talking about reusing the backing but mine didn't have a backing, I tried 1/2inch foam i bought from the fabric store with no luck, I just need to know what I can use for a backing and if it makes a difference its a 1996, thanks

Anything that's relatively stiff. It will need to flex a little in order to fit the inner mold line of the roof panel. I've seen people use cardboard, fiberboard, very thin plywood, you name it.
I've also seen people cut thin very high density foam to shape and glue it to the roof. They then cut the material and glue it in place, tucking the edges under the roof frame. If you go this route, consider something that will dampen the sound like Second Skin Luxury Liner Pro. You won't want to go too crazy (ie more than one product) since it will add a couple pounds of weight to the roof.

Unless you must have yellow vinyl... Joanns has foam backed headliner material in black. Buy a yard for $15. Just glue directly to the underside of the top. When done. It'll look like it came from the factory.
I don't have to use yellow vinyl, but the plan was to do the headliner, subwoofer box and shfter boot in yellow, the car is black so I thought it would be cool to have a contrasting color, but if all else fails ill go back to joanns and get the foam backed headliner material
