Default A question about engine ratings

I am still looking for a good C4, I have found many 91's at good prices ($7500-$11000), but what engine did they have in 91 ?

What year did the Vette go to the 300 horse LT1 ?

How much HP did the engine before it have and how di they compare performance wise ?

Thanks for the help guys and I look foward to joining the ranks.

92 is the first year of the lt1
91 has an L98.
the L98 had about 50 less horsepower, but more low end grunt. Performance differences were much off the line, the real difference comes in the top speed department. I find L98 cars more fun to drive, and cheaper to modify.

So you think then that 91 would be a better choice ?

I am not to concerned with top speed (not like I'll ever see it).

If the L98 motor is cheaper and easier to fix, than maybe that is the way to go, especially if it has more low end torque.

Anyone else have any opinions on this ? I am going to trust everyone else's judgement on this.

Just for curiosity sake, does anyone know how fast they are quartermile (LT1 and L98) ?

Thanks guys !

I don't agree with this, but I know it's a touchy subject. Get the car you like the most by driving both if you can. Build quality only got better each year and the interiors look a lot better on the newer models. Plus, I've never lost a race to a stock L98 before, no one has come close! :reddevil Quater mile times for a competent driver, not a baddass or crappy one, is 13.7-13.9's for the LT1....and 14.1-14.4's with the L98.

Nope. L98 DOES NOT have 50% less hp. LT1 rated at approx 300hp; L98 rated at approx 245 hp. ...L98 has less hp but enjoys a healthy dose of torque! Woohoooooo!

Really ? That sounds kind of slow.

I went 14 flat with a 94 Z28 auto, and 13.5 with a 95 Z28 six speed.

Nonetheless it is still respectable for a street car.

Like I said, with a respectable driver. There is always someone that can drive just a lil bit better. A member by the name of Mojo has taken his 95 stock to 13 flat quarters on a regular basis. I haven't timed mine yet at the track so I don't know. I did time my 0-60 and I managed a 5.02 with me boggin it in the start on a 82% humidity day. I know I can get her down to 4.8-4.9 with some more practice and on a perfect day I might even see 4.7!!!

Nice 0-60's !

Yeah I forgot to mention also I am near a very fast track (very low altitude) so the cars here are typically a little faster than a lot of other tracks.

Ok let's make a poll out of this:
L98 or LT1 and why ?

I'll take s many opinions as possible, and I will also try to drive both cars to see which I like better.

Thanks !

LT1: 1)Faster 2)More Reliable 3)Look better 4)Better Autos and Better Manuals(I think they changed them in 91?) 5)Better Gas Mileage 6)Better build quality 7)Newer 8)Bigger(I think) and Better Wheels

Where do you get these?

2) Depends on previous owners, well maintained they are perfectly fine. What about the majorly prone optisparks and rear intake manifold leaks for the LTx cars?
3) A 91 looks identical to a 92
4) 89-91 L98s and 92/93 LT1 had a stronger ZF6 than 94-96 did.
5) A well tuned L98 gets over 30mpg on the highway.

1.) No doubt, great engine
2.) More gizmo's, less reliable
3.) ?
4.) Wrong, wet behind the ears breath. Better be careful with those mods, your 94 (cough, cough) tranny is a little weaker than the previous versions. Input shaft is smaller, gears are cut with a greater angle to reduce that annoying gear sound.
5.) Wrong, gas sucking breath
6.) Glad you have this figured out for us, how is your cowl shake homeboy?
7.) DUH
8.) 17X9.5's started in 88, stock in 89. Sawblades looks are a matter of opinion, personally 90's have the best look to me, of course along with the ZR1 wheels.

How you measuring 0-60. Love that 0.01 accuracy.

I'm messing with you, don't take it personal. But that just a bunch of Malarky! :D :jester :p: :p:

Well, 17" started in 88 as a Z52/Z52 package addition, and were standard on 89+. Don't forget that the fronts were reduced to a smaller width somewhere around 93 to acommodate bitching owners about road tracking.

I like my 91, but if I could've afforded it, I would have bought a 96 lt4. :)

Yeah I would love to have a 96 LT4 too.............but unfortunately my wallet has a different opinion

So does anyone think that 91's are a good price range (I found few in 50-80K mile range going for between $7500 and $11,500)

I also found a few 92-94's in the $9000-$13,000 range, but most of them are 110K mile + cars)

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate you guys helping out a newbie.
