If you want to stay stock then remove your speakers and send them to Dr. Dons for a rebuild. It sounds as if you have at least 3 bad amplifiers, assuming you have a BOSE system. The speakers, if original are 25 years old and could certainly need a rebuild as the paper cones dry out and rip. Also the rest of the radio could also be bad.
Staying stock will probably cost more than buying a new radio and speakers, which will sound better and have better features, like playing CDs, getting HD radio and Pandora and Sirius and working with an Ipod or flash drive.
IMO I say go aftermarket. Should cost the same or less to get a MUCH better sounding, upgradeable and functional system.
The Bose is 25+ year old technology, and to my ears sounds like a turd even if nothing is wrong with it. You'll also be buying old parts to boot if remaining stock and be stuck with a cassette player? To me this is like buying an old Zenith console TV than a modern hi-def flatscreen. Even the low cost radios have modern must-have features like bluetooth, sat radio, and USB ports. The more costly ones do DVD and navi, all things you could never opt for when the car was produced.
I just got a hot deal on a new head unit.
My nephew recomended a Pioneer. OK
Went to Advance Auto yesterday they had the DEH-1300 on sale for $60(reg $80) and the DEH-2400 for $75.(reg $100) Cked. Amazon these are pretty good deals and no shipping.
Went back to Advance and told the guy I want a DEH-2400 he said Ok let me ck. to see if I have one in stock. He didn't have either one, now im starting to get PO and I said "if you don't have them you shouldn't advertise them" he said let me ck on comp. and see if I can get one from another Advance. He cked and they did. I saw a price of $35 for the 1300 and $45 for the 2400 so I said "whats that the wholesale price?" No he said if I bring it in you will get it for that price!
Well get me a 2400 I said, it came in today and I got a DEH-2400 for $48 out the door!
Almost feel like I stole the thing!
I spent $800 on a new Alpine unit and speakers, it soulds and looks great! I kept all the original speaker covers!
THe shop that installed mine kept all the speaker covers in place too. I was hesitant to replace the stock but have had no regrets since. Sound is tremendous, USB, satellite, etc. Sold the speakers and head unit (in need of various repairs) to offset the cost. Good luck.
I've also been trying to decide how to repair/replace the Bose in my '89. Pretty certain I'll go aftermarket - Probably Alpine - I've been really pleased with the one in my othger car.
