Putting on the splash guards was a.. *ahem* 'female dog'.
I had to use trial-and-error to get these things on, because with every guard, there was a different combination of the stock screws and the screws provided along with varying amounts of adjusting how tight the screws were just to get it aligned properly. But once that was done, it wasn't too hard just screwing them in. I'm pretty happy with the results. I hope I'm able to notice a difference in the amount of dirt that builds up on the tail lights and under the door sills.
And now for more complaining;
There are two different sized screws that hold the plastic in the wheel well in place, and I noticed that most of the time, you had to use the stock 'big' torx screws, and replace the smaller sized torx screws with the replacement hex cap screws. So at the end of it, at least on mine, there's a weird combination of hex cap screws and torx screws. Though on the pictures about you'll see that there is a silver slot screw sticking out like a sore thumb. Well, the OEM 'big' Torx screw had stripped somehow and wouldn't hold the guard in place, so I found the only screw that would work that I had laying around the garage. I plan on painting that black VERY soon. It's annoying me already.
had them on my '87 and now on the '89 and love them. They keep the crap off the side of the car and are not s gody as the altec's witch tend to scratch the paint under the guard.
Mine catch quite a bit of junk. Some stuff still hits but they do take the brunt of it. I don't even notice them anymore.
I have those on my '95, they catch most of the crap

I foresaw the issue you experienced and took mitigating steps to prevent it. Haven't tried removing them yet, but I'm fairly certain this trick is working as planned.
Notice, the part you'll need is the "gasket" for a mid-2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup wheel flare. If you need more explanation, let me know. (this is for the Altec-style wheel-flare/mud-flap.

I did something very similar. I added foam insulation to the backside of the mud guards, so the foam sits sandwiched between the mud guard and the fender. If I were to take the guards off (which I never will anyways), there will be no mark left behind on the paint of the fender.
