I assume you are trying to remove the cap right? To remove the whole distributor you only need to remove the hold down bolt which is near the base on the pax side near the egr.

To remove the cap (there may be other ways but this works for me...mark the base with a scribe, paint marker etc. Then loosen the hold down and turn the distibutor enough to access the cap bolts with a nutdriver etc. Re-install is the reverse, tighten the cap and reposition the distributor to align with the mark you made.

maybe that'll help?

I wouldn't loosen the distributor to access the back hold down screw. When setting the timing, turning the distributor 1/16" could easily change the timing 5 degrees. Scribing the location of the distributor relative to the manifold or whatever will get the distributor in the ballpark for starting a motor after the manifold has been off, but I wouldn't use it as the final timing setting. A timing light is needed for that. Use a screwdriver with a spring stem that will curve around the distributor to access the back screw. If it is a bolt, they make a socket handle with a spring stem.

I use a 1/4" socket on a 6" extension and sorta push the plug wires and hood seal out of the way so it slides down in there.
