Default Horn woes

Hey guys; Seems I have an intermitnent problem with my horns on my 91 Vert. They work (both buttons) sitting in the gagrage, as soon as I start driving both buttons are inoperative, sometimes when I turn the wheel they will work. I just pulled into my driveway with the wheel straight and they were not working, as soon as I turned off the ignition both buttons worked. I have removed the buttons and cleaned the contacts to no avail. Any thoughts on this.
Thanks

The horns changed quite a bit throughout the vette years.

I bet yours is like my 93's.

The turn signal cam is white plastic disk w/ a metal contact surface and a cylinder tube piece with a slot in it. This slot had broken off on mine and the horn connector fell out.

The turn signal cam cost about $15

It won't be hard to do the job as this piece isn't too buried in the complex gm steering column.

Horn woes... not to be confused with worn hoes!

I think Dizwiz is right, you're going to have to take the steering wheel off and keep digging until you find the problem. Unless it's the relay... I'm not sure why it would work with the ignition off and stop working when you turn the ignition on, but you could try changing the relay first.

Thanks for the replys. I did replace the relay about a year ago and still had the problem. The car sits alot so it wasen't a big deal to go without horns. I have time on my hands now and are starting to repair alot of little problems before they all jump up and bite me. Just replaced the headlight bushings this week and also repaired door panel window sweeps along with door locks. Looks like I will have to pull the steering wheel and see what's going on .

Finally got around to removing the steering wheel. the wire with a spring attached to it just pulled out of the tube and doesn't seem to have an attachment point at the bottom. . It just slides in and out of the tube. I was reluctant to remove the assembly ,just wasn't comfortable with what I saw in the FSM regarding allignment. So I just put everything back thinking the horns would not work at all now after my fiddling. Went for a 50 mile drive and both horn buttons work all the time. But i'm sure not for long because the spring just sits in the tube without being attached to anything. Thoughts?

This happens alot with these older cars, take it apart to see if you can figure it out, and when you put it back together it works. Maybe corrosion was the problem, but if not at least you know the location of the problem and should be able to replace the part..Most of the online Corvette sales sites have the parts....WW
