idle misfire

the 89 runs just fine but has developed two glitches
1 at idle it is rough tune upped compression good but almost sounds like a misfire some times it is not as rough but never smooth ?????

2 the automatic transmission does not shift to overdrive it used to every other gear is there and strong ??????

THANKS HOPE THERE IS A SOLUTION THAT IS REASONABLE
