just wondered does anyone else feel a tad disappointed with the first gear ratio on the six speed manual box? seems to me its to "short"? ive had 35 years of manual gearbox experience, this aint a good ratio!, I tend to forget about 1st gear and start (wherever possible) in 2nd, ive found this in other ZF box's, and whats all this "1st to 4th" mullarkey? seems like a total waste of time to me, dont make a lick of sense...other than that, a gorgeous car that id never want to be parted from..sex on wheels!

It is a fuel economy device to satisfy the emissions testing
"To avoid a gas guzzler tax, Chevrolet came up with an innovative (and annoying) gizmo called CAGS.
CAGS forces you to shift your manual transmission Corvette from first to fourth under light acceleration."
IMHO there is nothing wrong with the first gear ratio unless you have an l98 like I do. Shifting @ 4800 rpm sucks & makes the old phrase "wind it out!!" laughable.

And this isn't something unique to the C4 either.
Even the new Corvette and Camaro use this feature.
In "real world" driving it might seem like a pain in the butt to some.
But federal fuel economy tests are not performed like most people drive.
CAGS is very easy to defeat too if you don't like it.

id completely agree, it is a pain in the butt, when driving through town, with junctions, traffic signals etc, it seems like its screaming its **** off for want of a suitable gear change!
but hey ho, i love it and its strange habits! when it attracts more attention than the newest Nissan GT-R ive just pulled up beside then I know im on to a winner!!! not bad for an 18 year old car...
Heck, I think 1st gear ratio is too tall. I'd like it to be shorter for drag strip launches. 4.10 rear end gears fix this.
I guess it all depends on the use. I think the gear ratio is fine for street use and such. Compared to many 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders the gear is tall. IMHO.
First gear isn't too short, IMHO. But sixth gear is ridiculously tall. Somewhere between where fifth and sixth presently are is where sixth should be. I've considered a 4.10 gearset primarily to bring sixth gear down to a sane ratio.
