I still have the noise on my car engine, I swore it was the air pump, but maybe I was wrong.
Is it possible that the power steering pump bearing is gone? I dont use fluid.
maybe the alt. or the water pump I have no leaks and the car does not run hot, even in traffic.
What else can be tested?
Tomorrow I will have my son take a video with sound.
I've had good luck finding the bearing that is bad with a mechanic's stetoscope (available at most parts stores). Sometimes the stethoscope works better without the probe attached and using the open end of the rubber tube (where it normally is attached to the diaphram section of the probe) to locate a noise.
But, pulling the belt off and turning the accessories is sometimes the only way to find it. In all cases, the accessory pully should turn silky smooth w/o any wobble AT ALL. If you hear a "rolling sound like (dry) ball bearings, chances are good that is the problem.
Until I once replaced a PS pump I thought was causing a noise and it turned out to be the water pump after all, I'm not so cocky with regard to being 100% sure a stethoscope will work every time. But, with one exception (at least) it has put me on the problem every time.
i took the belt off and spun the pulleys and it seems to be the alternator. what i found out today is napa has a rebuilt for $103 and a $40 core charge and it has to be order with 24 to 48 hour shipping\
auto zone has three types of the same alternator and the three types are $69, $89 and $130 with core charges. the salesman told me if you are keeping your car, do not use the economy model because they are having a lot of trouble and the other two are lifetime warranty and they would still have to be ordered
the dealer had one for $267 exchange
advance discount auto parts had a new remy lifetime warranty in stock for $133 with a $12 core charge and that was a new one, only produced in mexico, so thats the way i went. i wound up keep the original cause it is the one that came with the car. i may send it out to get it rebuilt. i am installing it tomorrow, thanks for the help
i put on a new alternator and tensioner pulley. i also put on an air pump delete kit. a lot of the noise has gone away but there is still some noise. Somebody told me that it sounded like i spun a bearing. What would it sound like if i spun a bearing and how could i check?
i took the belt off and started the engine and the engine sounds good, so now i ordered a new water pump. what are the chances that the idler pulley smog pump and alternator all make noise at the same time
